Another Historical Starry Night.

Last week I came out of Zurich’s main railway station I experienced a pure delight. Zurich’s Bahnhofstrasse is not just any street. Known as one of the world’s most exclusive shopping boulevards, it stretches gracefully from the station to Lake Zurich. Lined with luxury boutiques, banks, and grand department stores, this iconic avenue is where tradition and elegance converge. Yet, every December, Bahnhofstrasse transforms into something truly magical—a glittering wonderland of Christmas lights that enchants both locals and visitors alike.

A Bright Idea Born from Community Spirit.

Bahnhofstrasse’s story begins in the mid-19th century when it was built on the site of Zurich’s old fortified walls. Designed to connect the city’s main railway station to Lake Zurich, the street quickly became a symbol of progress and prosperity. Over time, it transformed into a prestigious boulevard, celebrated for its elegance, luxury boutiques, and the way it reflected Zurich’s ambitions as a modern city. By the early 1970s, Bahnhofstrasse had firmly established itself as a central hub for commerce and culture. It was during this period that local shop owners and city planners collaborated to create a new holiday tradition. They envisioned festive lights that would not only beautify the street but also draw people into the heart of Zurich during the Christmas season.

The result was “Lucy,” named after The Beatles’ iconic song “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.” These lights were designed to evoke magic and wonder, transforming Bahnhofstrasse into a sparkling winter spectacle. Over the years, Lucy has evolved, adopting energy-efficient LED technology while preserving its enchanting charm and signature sparkle.

Why It’s So Special?

Lucy’s lights turn Bahnhofstrasse into a dazzling holiday destination. Suspended high above, they form a glowing canopy resembling a starry night, casting a warm ambiance over the crowds. Paired with festive storefronts, the aroma of roasted chestnuts, and holiday music, they create an unforgettable seasonal experience.

A highlight is the annual switch-on ceremony in late November, which officially marks the start of Zurich’s holiday celebrations. Visitors gather as the lights come alive, filling the street with a radiant glow and festive cheer.

So, what to do?

The best way to appreciate this wonder is to see it yourself. Why not plan a visit to Bahnhofstrasse this December? Or, mark your calendar for next November to be part of the magical switch-on ceremony. And if you do, please share your experience with Lucy’s starry night – I would love to hear your story.
