Hi! I’m Marieke Bergmann – van den Bovenkamp, and my journey has always revolved around uncovering the beauty in history and sharing it with others. I’m a building engineer by training, educated in the Netherlands and the UK, with over 18 years of experience breathing new life into listed buildings. Whether it was restoring their grandeur, finding creative new uses, or ensuring their stories endure for future generations, I’ve dedicated my career to preserving cultural heritage.
“I Spy With My Historical Eye” is a reflection of my passion for learning, storytelling, and exploring how history shapes our lives. I’m fascinated by the stories behind buildings, historical events, role models, and art. These stories inspire me daily, and I love helping others see the value and wonder in them too. There’s so much richness in understanding the past—it’s like holding a mirror to our present and future.
Originally from the Netherlands, I moved to Switzerland eight years ago with my husband and our three daughters. Living here has been an incredible journey of cultural discovery, and I’ve embraced Swiss life, becoming fluent in German and finding joy in hiking the mountains, skiing, and wandering through the charming streets of old cities. Museums and cultural heritage remain my playgrounds, where I discover and connect with new stories.
At the heart of everything I do, I believe in the power of stories—not just to inform but to inspire. Through “I Spy With My Historical Eye,” I hope to share that inspiration and help others uncover the magic in the world around them.
